Iryna's advice on how to become more successful in international sales

In this blog, I discuss my 20 years of experience in the Telco industry, discuss what I have learnt and provide some tips on how to be a successful businessperson.  


A brief history of telecommunications

During the 1990s there was an international trend towards liberalisation in the telecommunications market.

Before that, most countries in the world had a combined governmental agency for all national postal, telegraph and telephone- related public services. 


My history in telecommunications

My parents and their parents before them all worked for the Ukrainian Ministry of Post and Telecommunications in either the postal department or the telecommunications department.


My mother wanted me to break the mould and study medicine. However, on the way to register at the University, my father and I, in the absence of my mother, decided to "miss" the turn off to the Kyiv Medical University and head straight to the State University of Telecommunications.

I spent the next 7 years there also doing my Postgraduate studies in telco, management, marketing and psychology. I guess telecommunications just runs in my veins! 


14 years at Comfone

Fast forward to 2020 with more than 20 years working in the Telecoms industry. I have spent 14 of those years with Comfone, which, in my opinion, is the best company for inspirational services, people and products.

So much of the technology has changed over the years, it's truly amazing. But despite all of the technological advances, some things remain the same. 


Business is always about the people

When it comes to being successful in life and at business, the true differentiators are the relationships that we develop with each other. During my career, I have focused on building solid relationships with business partners and colleagues. I call customers business partners, because both Parties benefit from doing business together.


How to build good business relationships

During the years that I have spent in this industry and through experience, I have learnt a lot about the best ways to build great and lasting business relationships. I believe that to achieve this goal, someone working in the international sales business should be:

  • Authentic
  • Open
  • Kind
  • Honest
  • Professional
  • Highly experienced
  • Transparent
  • Reliable
  • Genuine in their motivations

I have learnt that trust is built when commitments are met.

With time, the lines between "business" relationships and "personal" relationships become blurred and they tend to blend into one.

I strongly believe that as someone working in international business, we should build the relationship before trying to sell something. How does the old adage go? People buy from people


People buy from people

If you focus on building your relationships and less on the transaction, success will follow.

Being on the front line in the international sales business, you need good high quality solutions, complete innovative portfolio and a strong team behind you.

But let's not forget our beloved Telco technology. It is helping us all so much during these challenging Covid times to stay connected and continue to build and work on our so very important relationships.
